Advancing Battery Innovation: Insights from the twinBATT Cluster – AccCellBaT, DigiBatt, FASTEST, and THOR

On May 5, the twinBATT Cluster will host its first joint webinar, bringing together four Horizon Europe projects—DigiBatt, FASTEST, THOR, and AccCellBaT—to share progress and foster collaboration in the field of battery testing and development.

At 09:20 CET, Bruno Rodrigues, coordinator of the FASTEST project, will introduce the project’s testing approach. FASTEST is developing a fast-track testing platform that combines physical and virtual methods, using Design of Experiments (DoE) strategies, digital twins, and smart algorithms. The goal is to improve testing efficiency and support the development of battery systems with better performance and safety over time.

This webinar is part of a broader effort by the twinBATT Cluster to align activities across projects, promote knowledge exchange, and support joint outreach. Through shared events and tools, the cluster aims to contribute to more effective and coordinated battery research in Europe.

In a nutshell. The first cluster meeting brought together DigiBatt, AccCellBaT, THOR, and FASTEST, four Horizon Europe projects, to kick-start a collaborative journey in advanced battery testing. By forming a dedicated cluster, the projects aim to share expertise, align communication efforts, and drive innovation through joint activities such as webinars, workshops, and cross-promotion. United by a common mission, the cluster sets the foundation for accelerating sustainable energy solutions through digitalization, virtualization, and smarter testing protocols.

Digibatt accelerates battery testing by combining state-of-the-art digital technology with advanced physical workflows, reducing testing time by 30% and costs by 20%. This 3-year Horizon EU project also emphasizes open-source tools, fostering innovation and collaboration within the global battery community.

THOR accelerates battery development by reducing costly, time-consuming testing protocols with a Digital Twin tool that simulates battery behavior. This project aims to shorten development times, cut the number of physical tests, and promote innovation in mobility and stationary battery applications.

AccCellBaT advances virtualization, front-loading, and continuous validation and verification (V&V) to optimize battery design, cut costs, and speed up time-to-market. It will develop a process manual and an integrated tool for managing V&V, validated by two manufacturers in the automotive and stationary battery sectors.

FASTEST aims to develop and validate a fast-track testing platform capable of delivering a strategy based on the Design of Experiments (DoE) and producing robust testing results by combining multi-scale and multi-physics virtual and physical testing. This approach will accelerate battery system R&D and enable the design of more reliable, safer, and longer-lasting battery systems. The project’s prototype fast-track hybrid testing platform promotes a new, holistic, interconnected approach. From a global test facility perspective, additional services—such as smart DoE algorithms, virtualised benches, and digital twin (DT) data—are incorporated into daily operations to reach new levels of efficiency.
